FUNDING RADAR – 20 OCTOBER 2026 – SPOTTING OPPORTUNITIES. FUNDING INNOVATION

Start-ups, SMEs and research partnerships

Funding your next stage of innovation

From early business development to commercial growth, which funding opportunities are worth exploring?

For start-ups and SMEs, finding funding can be difficult. There are numerous programmes, each with different requirements, deadlines and expectations.

Some support early research. Others fund technical validation, collaborative development or commercial demonstration. Beyond grants, businesses can explore accelerators, private investment and repayable finance.

This week’s Funding Radar brings together selected opportunities and explains where they fit in the innovation journey.

1 | IDEA & EARLY BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

You have an idea, an early product or a recently established company.

Not every new business is ready for an innovation grant. At this stage, commercial validation, mentoring and access to finance may be more valuable.

Techstars London Accelerator 2027

ALTERNATIVE FINANCE | Accelerator and potential equity investment

  • Best for: Early-stage businesses with significant growth potential.
  • Application deadline: 18 November 2026.
  • Support: Structured accelerator programme, mentoring and investor access.
  • Consideration: Participation and investment may involve equity and other contractual commitments.

British Business Bank Start Up Loans

ALTERNATIVE FINANCE | Repayable loan

Start Up Loans can provide finance for eligible founders and young businesses, alongside mentoring.

Unlike a grant, the finance must be repaid. This may nevertheless be a more appropriate route for a business that needs initial operating capital rather than funding for a substantial research project.

Funding Radar observation: Before applying for an innovation grant, establish what the business needs to demonstrate next. That might be technical feasibility, customer demand or a credible route to market.

2 | RESEARCH & PROOF OF CONCEPT

You have identified a technical challenge that requires new knowledge, research or specialist expertise.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP)

APPLY NOW | Collaborative innovation grant

Funder: Innovate UK
Competition: KTP 2026–27 Round 4
Closes: 27 January 2027, 11:00 AM UK time — confirmed

Funding: Up to £12.5 million is available across the competition. This is the total competition budget, not an individual award.

KTPs allow businesses to collaborate with eligible universities, colleges, research and technology organisations or Catapults on strategic innovation projects.

The knowledge-base organisation leads the application, while the business contributes towards project costs.

Best suited to: Businesses with a defined innovation challenge requiring expertise that is not readily available internally.

Eureka Globalstars Japan 2027

APPLY NOW — PARTNER-DEPENDENT | International collaborative R&D grant

Funder: Innovate UK / Eureka
Competition ID: 2586
Closes: 20 January 2027, 11:00 AM UK time — confirmed

Funding: UK applicants can request up to £600,000 in grant funding per project, from a UK competition allocation of at least £2 million.

For eligible industrial research costs, published grant rates are up to 70% for micro and small businesses, 60% for medium businesses and 50% for large businesses.

Projects must involve at least one UK business and one independent Japanese SME. Priority technology areas include AI, biotechnology, semiconductors, quantum, cybersecurity, connectivity and space.

Important: Applicants must complete both the relevant Innovate UK and Eureka submissions. The Eureka submission has an earlier UK-time deadline on 19 January.

Funding Radar observation: International R&D grants can be valuable, but partners need to agree their technical contributions, budgets, intellectual property arrangements and commercial objectives well before submission.

3 | VALIDATION & COMMERCIAL PREPARATION

Your technology exists, but you need to demonstrate its performance in a practical setting.

BridgeAI Deployment Catalyst

APPLY NOW — IF A DEPLOYMENT PARTNER IS IDENTIFIED | Innovation grant

Funder: Innovate UK
Opens: 21 October 2026 — confirmed
Closes: 8 December 2026, 11:00 AM UK time — confirmed

The three competition strands cover:

Funding: £100,000–£200,000 in grant funding per project under Phase 1.

Projects must involve a UK-registered AI SME and an eligible UK deployment organisation, with no more than three consortium members.

The emphasis is on developing credible use cases, assessing readiness and preparing for subsequent deployment stages.

Best suited to: AI businesses with sufficiently mature technology, a clear operational application and an engaged deployment partner.

Full ADOPT Grant — Round 10

APPLY NOW | Collaborative agricultural innovation grant

Funder: Defra / Innovate UK
Competition ID: 2596
Closes: 2 December 2026, 11:00 AM UK time — confirmed

Funding: Up to £5 million is available across the competition, supporting projects with total eligible costs between £50,000 and £200,000.

The programme funds on-farm trials and experiments that address practical challenges in agriculture, horticulture and forestry.

An established farming, growing or forestry business in England must lead and collaborate with at least one other farming business.

Agricultural technology SMEs may be valuable partners, but cannot automatically lead independently.

ADOPT Facilitator Support Grant — Round 12

TIME-SENSITIVE | Application development support

Closes: 11 November 2026 — confirmed

Eligible farming, growing and forestry businesses in England can apply for £2,500 to engage an external project facilitator to support development of a Full ADOPT Grant application.

This is not a general consultancy grant for technology suppliers. The eligible farming business must apply.

Funding Radar observation: Validation funding should produce evidence that supports a subsequent decision. A technically successful trial has greater commercial value when its objectives and measures are agreed from the outset.

4 | DEMONSTRATION & DEPLOYMENT

Your technology is approaching commercial application and requires further development or demonstration.

Sustainable Medicines Manufacturing Innovation — Round 2

APPLY NOW — FOR ESTABLISHED PARTNERSHIPS | Collaborative R&D grant

Funder: Innovate UK / Department of Health and Social Care
Competition ID: 2560
Closes: 2 December 2026, 11:00 AM UK time — confirmed

Funding: Up to £7 million across the competition, with anticipated individual grant requests of £500,000–£1 million.

This programme supports technologies and processes that improve sustainability in medicines manufacturing.

Relevant areas include green chemistry, circularity, productivity, resource efficiency, waste reduction and emissions reduction.

Applications must be collaborative and include at least one UK-registered SME receiving grant funding.

Best suited to: Established industrial and research partnerships developing technologies with measurable environmental and manufacturing benefits.

Horizon Europe collaborative R&D

PREPARE FOR RELEVANT CALLS | International research and innovation grants

Horizon Europe offers UK universities and eligible businesses opportunities to participate in European research and innovation consortia.

Topics span advanced manufacturing, AI, energy, climate, environmental technologies, health and mobility.

Funding rates and consortium requirements vary by action and topic. UK participation is generally possible through the UK’s association to Horizon Europe, subject to topic-specific restrictions.

For SMEs, the most productive route may be joining an established consortium where their technology or commercial expertise makes a defined contribution.

Explore the European Commission Funding & Tenders Portal

Funding Radar observation: Larger collaborative programmes can be attractive, but they demand careful preparation. The quality of the partnership, delivery plan and commercial exploitation strategy matters as much as the underlying technology.

5 | SCALING & GROWTH

Your technology has been validated and you are preparing for commercial expansion.

At this stage, a business may need a combination of innovation funding, private investment and commercial finance.

EIC Accelerator

PREPARE FOR NEXT ROUND | Deep-tech innovation funding

Funder: European Innovation Council
2027 application dates: Not yet confirmed in the final adopted EIC Work Programme at the time of this edition.

The EIC Accelerator targets breakthrough innovations with significant market potential and substantial technical or commercial risk.

It is particularly relevant to ambitious deep-tech SMEs, rather than businesses undertaking routine software development.

UK applicants: Eligibility for the grant component must be distinguished from the EIC Fund investment component, which is subject to separate restrictions.

Innovate UK Investor Partnerships

ALTERNATIVE FINANCE | Innovation grant plus private investment

Investor Partnerships competitions can help eligible SMEs combine public funding for innovation with private investment from approved investors.

These competitions are particularly relevant to businesses with substantial R&D costs and a credible investment proposition.

Individual competitions have specific eligibility conditions, sector priorities and deadlines.

Explore Innovate UK Investor Partnerships

British Business Bank

ALTERNATIVE FINANCE | Loans and investment

For businesses that have completed their principal R&D activities, further grants may not be the most appropriate source of finance.

Debt and equity funding may support commercial expansion, manufacturing capacity, recruitment and market development.

JULIE’S INSIGHT | Is the opportunity right for your business?

A funding competition may offer a substantial grant, but that does not necessarily make it suitable.

Before committing to an application, consider:

  • What does the business actually need to achieve next?
  • Is the proposed activity genuinely innovative?
  • Does the technology match the maturity expected by the funder?
  • Are the necessary partners, resources and facilities available?
  • Can the business afford the required contribution?
  • What will happen after the funded project ends?

Funding should support a credible development plan, not determine the direction of the business simply because money is available.

For many start-ups and SMEs, the most useful first step is to establish which funding routes are realistic and how they might fit together over time.
